The road to the biggest event in sports entertainment has begun, with the 30th annual Royal Rumble. With theme Remember the Rumble people thought that this Rumble would be on for the record books. However the Rumble was actually one of the most disappointing in recent years.
The pre-show was had three matches but the most important of the three being the Raw Tag Team Championship Belts changed shoulders, from those of Sheamus and Cesaro to those of The Club Luke Gallows and Karl Andersson.
The matches started with Charlotte Flair daughter of wrestling legend Ric Flair vs former NXT Women’s Champion Bayley for the Raw Women’s Championship. It ended with Charlotte retaining her title after enduring so much Bayley finally ended up on the mat for the three count, after one of Charlotte’s signature moves the Natural Selection.
Next was a Match for the WWE Universal Championship a spout between the Champion Kevin Owens and Challenger Roman Reigns, with Kevin Owens’ best friend Chris Jericho hung 50 feet over the ring in a shark cage so that he would not be interfering. However that didn’t stop Kevin Owens from winning it wasn’t Chris Jericho who was interfering it was Braun Strowman, “The Beast Among Men.” Who interfered last minute and put Roman Reigns through the announce table after being put through a table earlier in the match Reigns had been pushed past his point Owens who had been on the ground almost lifeless was able to crawl to Reigns and keep him down for the three count.
Next was the fight for the Cruiserweight Championship between, the challenger “The Man That Gravity Forgot,” Neville, and the Champion Rich Swann. The match was action packed with lots of high flying moves. The match seemed to go forever back and forth but when Neville was able to pull away he pulled away. With that he walked away with the WWE Cruiserweight Championship.
The Final Singles fight of the night was for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The participants WWE Champion AJ Styles and WWE legend John Cena. This was Cena’s true test of skill as winning would be his 16th championship win tying the record of Ric Flair. For Styles this would mean retaining the title against one of the most decorated superstars of all time, and it would also be a milestone defending the title and retaining one year after his initial debut in the WWE. The Match was the best singles competiton of the night the crowd chanting for Styles then Cena, it seemed to be the longest match of the night, and fans like me thought it was over when Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment+ on Styles trying to pin immediately afterwards and Styles kicked out, but it was not enough Cena was more determined than ever. Style hit his Finishing move the Styles Clash, but to no avail Cena kicked out and hit Styles with two more Attitude Adjustment’s back to back and that was the final moment. Cena won and tied the record for most Championships won, and is now on the verge of rewriting history.
The Main Event was next the match that was supposed to be the greatest Royal Rumble in history turned out to be very disappointing. The match where 30 competitors are to enter the ring and only one wins was supposed to be amazing, but when fans realized that there were no suprise returns, or any call ups from NXT. The crowd was silent. However just because it was disappointing doesn’t mean there were no memorable parts of the Rumble. Like Braun Strowman eliminating 7 men, or when Braun Strowman was eliminated by Sami Zayn who hit him with the Helluva Kick, Dean Ambrose drop kicked him while he was in the corner, and Baron Corbin who was the final factor and hit him with a lariat over the top rope, or when Brock Lesnar entered and laid waste to everybody in the ring, and then Goldberg entered and laid waste to him, and then the Undertaker’s Music Hit, and we got the biggest crowd pop of the night, but we didn’t see him walking down the isle he appeared behind Goldberg only to end his run at the Rumble. There was also moments that fans hated such as Roman Reigns coming in at number 30 or the fact that Randy Orton won the whole thing.
All in all I had no problem with the Rumble. There were the ups and downs and although I was one for five in predictions I will in fact Remember the Rumble.
